Review: Film review – Pearl Harbor (2001) – The title suggests this is a film about the events of Pearl Harbor during the Second World War but in reality it’s a couple of love stories pinned to that story to provide action and drama. Starring Ben Affleck, Kate Beckinsale and Josh Hartnett this is a stylish well filmed movie. Why have I rated it four out of ten I hear you ask? Well take a look at the final paragraph.

Two young boys grow up to be American pilots together. When the Second World War breaks out one of them volunteers to go to the UK and fight against the Germans while the other remains behind. Before Affleck goes to the UK however he falls in love but has to leave her behind. While he is gone his friend and the girl are both assigned to Pearl Harbor, she as a nurse, he as a pilot. When they receive the news that he is dead they slowly come together and form a relationship. All the while this is going on the Japanese are planning a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor..

Having chosen Pearl Harbor as the basis for a film the Writer (Randall Wallace) and the director (Michael Bay) have, to be frank, made a pigs ear out of it. Clumsy, Plodding and over romanticised the film is a mess. The four out of ten is for the special effects (won an Oscar), cinematography and sound (won an Oscar) which are in places good. I’ll be honest, you’ll do well to make it to the end.

The Big Country

Rating: 8/10

Starring: Gregory Peck, Jean Simmons, Carroll Baker, Charlton Heston, Burl Ives, Charles Bickford, Alfonso Bedoya, Chuck Connors, Chuck Hayward, Buff Brady, Jim Burk, Dorothy Adams, Chuck Roberson, Bob Morgan, John McKee

Directed by: William Wyler

Review: Film review – The Big Country (1958) – The plot is long and drawn out but essentially it follows the story of retired sea captain James McKay played by Gregory Peck. McKay travels to the West to join his fiancée Patricia played by Carroll Baker. Once there he finds himself surrounded by a feud between his fiancées father Major Terrill played by Charles Bickford and a neighboring ranching clan led by Rufus Hannassey played by Burl Ives. Alongside this feud he clashes with the foreman Steve Leech of the Terrill ranch played by Charlton Heston who dislikes him and covets his fiancée. McKay is an unusual man who does nothing for show but has a steady and assured way. Unfortunately his fiancée doesn’t appreciate this and this leads to conflict. McKay decides to buy a neighbours ranch “Big Muddy” owned by a school teacher Julie Maragon played by Jean Simmons. This is to be a wedding present and he hopes it will help keep the peace as it adjoins both feuding ranches and has a valuable supply of water. All these strings slowly draw together to create the final knot that is the finish.

A classic western The Big Country paints a wonderful vista of The West. Rich was the first word that came to me, its colour and style is rich and deep. There are some great performances from Gregory Peck, Jeans Simmons and Burl Ives in particular and the whole thing takes you away to “The Big Country” that is The west.

Ps: Forgot to mention the beautiful musical score by Jerome Moross.

Review: Film review – The Guns of Navarone (1961) – This 1960's war film is something of a classic. With a glittering cast including Gregory Peck, James Robertson Justice, David Niven, Anthony Quinn, Anthony Quayle, and Stanley Baker. An Allied commando unit is sent to cross occupied Greek territory and destroy a German fortress that threatens Allied naval ships trying to rescue 2,000 British troops. The fortress contains radar-directed guns that cannot be destroyed by bombing from the air, as a consequence the team must destroy them on the ground. Before they can do this they must cross the island of Navarone. They encounter many problems along the way until they face the final task.

Its a long film with plenty of twists and turns. There are some excellent performances in particular from Gregory Peck, David Niven and Anthony Quinn. There is a great finish made even more fascinating by the fact that David Niven almost died making it. Its a classic and as such must be watched at some point.

Review: Film review – Space Cowboys – (2000) – An old Russian communication satellite is out of control and plummeting to earth. NASA is unable to prevent it because its systems were designed decades ago and no one now understands them, except the original team that designed and built them. That's where the four oldest astronautics in history step in. Clint Eastwood stars alongside Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland and James Garner. In thirty days they have to get up to scratch in all aspects before they man a space shuttle into space to save the day.

Needless to say leave any common sense you have at the door, its a load of cobblers. That said there is the occasional laugh to be had and it is actually well made. Its a watch once and never need to see again movie.

Directed by: Anthony Minghella

Review: Film review – Cold Mountain (2003) – Set during the American Civil War this film tells two stories in parallel. Jude Law plays W. P. Inman a quiet man from North Carolina who having fallen in love with Ada (played by Nicole Kidman), the new preacher's daughter, joins the Confederate Army. After fighting for three years he is badly wounded but survives and with the war nearly over decides to desert and return to his love at Cold Mountain. In the meantime Ada, unable to look after herself and with her father now dead is struggling to survive when Ruby Thewes played by Renee Zellweger shows up. Ruby is incredibly practical and they both set about making the farm work while Ada waits for Inman to return.

There is a rich plot here with plenty to get your teeth into as both stories slowly come together. Its beautifully shot and to top it off Zellweger steals the show with a superb supporting role demonstrating her fantastic ability to transform herself from one character to another. She was given an Academy Award and it was well deserved. Good stuff, well worth watching.

Starring: Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Dominic Cooper, Julie Walters, Christine Baranski, Philip Michael, Ashley Lilley, Rachel McDowall, Enzo Squillino, Niall Buggy

Directed by: Phyllida Lloyd

Review: Film review – Mamma Mia! (2008) – Mamma Mia! Is a musical based on the successful West End/Broadway musical of the same name. Meryl Streep plays the lead as single mother Donna Sheridan. Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan and Stellan Skarsgård play her old flames who have been invited to her daughter Sophie's (played by Amanda Seyfried) wedding. Sophie has worked out that one of them is her father and wants him to be at the wedding. Queue an endless stream of garbage known as the plot, stuffed full of bad singing by people who should know better.

I'll be honest, I watched this through gritted teeth. Frankly its my worst nightmare! Obviously I'm not the market this is aimed at but I can't imagine who is. I've given it two points for the music and one as compensation for not being the target audience but that's as far as I can stretch. Its bad, there's no getting around it. Its a mess, the songs are poorly done and its a massive waste of what is, after all, an all star cast. I'd rather pull my eyes out than watch it again.

Rating: 8/10

Review: Film review – The Hunt for Red October (1990) – Captain Marko Ramius played by Sean Connory has been given the latest first strike nuclear submarine created by the Soviet Union for sea trials. Unbeknown to the Russian government he and a number of his officers intend to use it to defect to the West. Meanwhile Jack Ryan played by Alec Baldwin working as an analyst for the CIA discovers what he thinks are pictures for a new type of submarine built by the Russians that show mysterious tubes running down its sides. After consulting with a colleague he concludes the Russians have built a submarine with a caterpillar drive rendering it untraceable to western forces. Recalled to CIA headquarters he is advised that he is in fact correct and that the first submarine of this type is on the move having recently left a Russian submarine base.

What follows is a game of cat and mouse with all types of sea going forces as the Russians try to find and sink the rogue submarine and the US forces try to work out what's going on and what to do. Jack eventually sees that Ramius is trying to defect and develops a plan to help him and at the same time get control of the Russian submarine so that the US can inspect it and understand the new technology behind the caterpillar drive.

There are problems with this film, not the least of which is Sean Connory playing a Russian. His Scottish brogue gets in the way far too much I'm afraid. But setting that aside there is a very good action film here. Its unabashed cold war nonsense but very entertaining none the less.

Review: Film review - The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005) – This is the first of what will be a series of films chronicling the famous C. S. Lewis series of books based around Narnia. Like The Lord of the Rings these books never looked like being translated into film successfully until modern CGI came about and transformed the possibilities. William Moseley plays Peter, Anna Popplewell - Susan, Georgie Henley - Lucy and Skandar Keynes - Edmund the four children transported to Narnia via a wardrobe they find when they are evacuated from London to a house in the countryside during World War II. While Peter, Susan and Lucy join the alliance against the White Witch with Aslan (voiced by Liam Neeson), Edmund is drawn into betraying them by the White Witch (played by Tilda Swinton). Peter, Susan and Lucy unite with Aslan and eventually free Edmund from the White Witch before joining battle against her armies for the prize of Narnia.

Its great to see what was once only an image in my mind based on the original books come to life like this. Though perhaps not as great a translation as that of The Lord of the Rings nevertheless good to see. Liam Neeson as the voice of Aslan was inspired and Tilda Swinton does a fine job as The White Witch. Not great, but good enough and great for kids.

Directed by: Brad Bird, Jan Pinkava

Review: Film review – Ratatouille (2007) – Pixar and Disney combine to bring us a classic Disney animation. Remy is a rat, no ordinary rat though, he is a rat that has unusual skills. He can read and he is interested in cooking! Normally a country rat, one day a crises drives all the rats from their home and Remy gets separated from his relatives in a drainage system. Once he reaches safety he discovers he is alone and in Paris. Not far from Auguste Gusteau's restaurant, his hero. Auguste is dead but his restaurant is still going using the recipes he created when he was alive. Remy becomes friends with Linguini (played by Lou Romano) who cleans the restaurant and eventually ends up using him to cook in the restaurant. Alongside the cooking plot the head chef Skinner (played by Ian Holm) discovers Remy's true identity and spends his time trying to plot his downfall despite his success in the kitchen. All this leads to a finale involving Remy having to cook for the great restaurant critic Anton Ego who had previously taken a star from the restaurant that lead to Gusteau's death.

Its beautifully made and there is a great script to go with it. Lots of fun. Great work. Its got the Disney magic although I'm not sure that isn't Pixars magic these days.

Mr Magoriums Wonder Emporium

Rating: 8/10

Starring: Dustin Hoffman, Natalie Portman, Jason Bateman, Zach Mills, Ted Ludzik

Directed by: Zach Helm

Review: Film review – Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium (2007) – This film tells the story of a small toy shop run by Mr Magorium played by Dustin Hoffman for 243 years, selling weird and wonderful things. However, Mr Magorium tells his assistant Molly Mahoney played by Natalie Portman one day that he will be leaving the next day. At first she thinks he is just intending to retire but eventually realises that he is going to die and that she is expected to take over the running of the shop. Not as simple as it seems as the shop is a magical shop!

To help Molly take over the shop Mr Magorium hires a 'mutant' (an accountant) Henry Weston played by Jason Bateman to look over the books and straighten out more than 200 years of neglect of the accounts. She also has the help of a little boy named Eric Applebaum played by Zach Mills who works in the shop. At first Molly doesn't know how to run the store and even decides to sell it when Mr Magorium goes but Henry and Eric persuade her that she must run the store.

Sometimes a children's film just has that certain something which can only be described as magic that lifts the film from the ordinary to something which will last and this film has managed to capture that certain something, so congratulations to the Director, crew and cast, good job. Will be a fixture at Christmas time for years to come.
