Review: Film review - As Good as It Gets (1997) - This is a fantastic film, there's no other way of describing it. The script is beautifully written and Jack Nicholson plays the lead to perfection. Constantly funny and at the same time a wonderful study of human foibles.
Nicholson plays a writer who suffers from compulsive behaviour disorder. This means he hardly interacts with the world, is constantly insulting to other people and has many hangups. This is the source of much humour throughout the film. Slowly he becomes involved with two other people, his gay next door neighbour (played by Greg Kinnear) and a waitress (played by Helen Hunt) at his local cafe.
Despite his external prickliness he ends up helping both the neighbour (who gets beaten up by burglars) and his waitress (who has a sick son). The two stories come together when the three of them go on a road trip to enable the neighbour to visit his parents to ask for financial help. This brings about the very unlikely scenario of romantic involvement between Nicholson and the dreamy Hunt.
This is a beautifully dark comedy with a great script, great casting and excellent performances from all the cast. There is nothing bad to say about this film. Brilliant.
By the way, if you ever watch this film and start to recognise yourself in Nicholson's part? You've forgotten to take your tablets
